Sharing a love of life through dance by Melanie Bradford (MK Dance)
If kids dance lessons are mentioned, I suspect quite a few people think of preschoolers in tutus, impossibly slick backed hair and emotional rollercoasters between endless rehearsals for competitions, exams and shows.
For the last 25 years I’ve tried to challenge these stereotypes and create a warm, welcoming and safe place for anyone of any age to experience different styles of dance and explore how dance can help with expressing emotions.
Our main focus is to create experiences that our members remember positively. Yes, these do include activities like performing on stage and showcasing our work on cinema screens but it is also about meeting new friends and developing that inner confidence to project ourselves. Dance is amazing because it spans the boundary between the Arts and Sport and we really exploit the development of skills in both areas through dance theatre projects and physical games.
My life passion is dance and through my classes I hope that others get the opportunity to share a little bit of that and gain some life skills (e.g. public performance and forming exercise habits) that maximise their enjoyment of the world we live in.
MK Dance classes are held in the village hall in Barlborough (S43 4HJ) on Saturday mornings. We are a member of the United Teachers of Dance and the Guild for Professional Teachers of Dance. Anyone is welcome to join at any time of the year and the first taster class is free. Lessons range in price from £6 per hour for a group class to £26 for private sessions.
We are always on the look out for collaborations and to undertake projects with other clubs or under represented communities. Let’s provide exciting opportunities for more people to benefit from dance!
