If you move into a new property or a property that does not have a green bin, then you must purchase one from us at a cost of £33.65 including VAT. This can be done via our Self Service portal (opens in a new window) or telephone on 01246 242424 Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm (excluding bank holidays).

Please read our Waste Collection Policy for more information.

The green bin is for garden waste and should be used in conjunction with the black and burgundy bins, as it is important that you manage your waste and reduce what we send to landfill. Please ensure only the waste permitted is placed into your green bin otherwise we may refuse to collect it.

What can I put in my green bin?

  • Grass cuttings, flowers and weeds
  • Leaves, hedge and plant clippings, prunings
  • Left over fruit, salad, vegetable waste, egg shells
  • Cooked food leftovers – bread, pastries, pasta, meat, fish (raw and cooked – including bones) plate scrapings, tea bags and coffee grounds. Food can be placed in compostable food bags
manufactured to the British Standard EN13432 only. (No retail carrier bags)

During green bin suspension weeks, please place food waste in your black bin.

Please do not put any of the following items in your green bin as we will be unable to collect it.

  • Cardboard boxes and card packaging – these go in your burgundy bin
  • Wallpaper and wrapping paper
  • Waxed packaging, such as juice cartons – these go in your burgundy bin
  • Stone, rubble, soil or turf
  • Timber or plywood
  • Ashes
  • Dog and cat waste
  • Disposable nappies
  • Plastic
  • All types of bin liners, carrier bags, packaging or foil – these go in your burgundy bin
  • Bottles, cans and papers – these go in your burgundy bin

You need to make sure your bin is presented, with the lid shut, at the edge of your property where it meets the pavement by 6am on your collection day. Please note that no extra bags or boxes will be taken.

If, due to disability or sickness you, (or anyone else in your property) is unable to present your bin for collection, then you can apply for Assisted Bin Collections.
