Our Five:60 scheme aims to help stem the rise in childhood obesity from reception to year 6 children by increasing levels of physical activity and encouraging children, parents and teachers to make the necessary lifestyle changes to become more active and promote the benefits of a well balanced diet.
The activities are led by an exercise and fitness specialist in curriculum time as part of the schools PHSE timetable. The specialist is supported by a teacher during each session who assists in coaching and mentoring participants over a 12-week programme. The exercise and fitness specialist can then refer suitable participants to a special weekly after school Five:60 activity club which will help to signpost interested children and families to other mainstream physical activity sessions.
It is hoped that by the end of the 12-week programme all participants will be undertaking 60 minutes of physical activity a day and eating five portions of fruit and vegetables.
