Carr Vale Nature Reserve
One of the top sites for birdwatching in Derbyshire. This wetland reserve has a mixture of open water, marsh, wet and dry grassland, scrub and trees attracting a rich variety of birds throughout the year. Bolsover TV took a trip around Carr Vale Nature Reserve, Peter Fidler Reserve and Stockley Trail to see some of the sounds and sights in what has been described as the best wetlands site to watch birds in the East Midlands and have produced a video.
Doe Hill Country Park
Described as one of Bolsover District’s best kept secrets, Doe Hill Country Park is on the outskirts of Tibshelf and Newton, covering 43 hectares. It is a mix of broad-leaved woodland, species-rich grassland and wetland and is the perfect spot for scenic walks, bike rides, bird watching and a spot of photography. Owned by Banks Mining, it’s the result of an old open cast site which closed in 1998 and is run by a small group of volunteers.
Hilcote Meadow
A project developed by the community Hilcote Environmental and Leisure Projects group. It is a beautiful meadow with planting and wood sculptures dotted around. Enjoy a nice family stroll and picnic as you listen to the wildlife.
Pleasley Pit Country Park
A heritage museum showing how life used to be working in a colliery, surrounded by the equally impressive Pleasley Pit Country Park.
Poulter Country Park
Poulter Country Park, is a great place for nature lovers to see many different birds, wildflowers, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies. Visitors can walk on waymarked limestone paths and look out for 'art along the way' with various sculptures dotted around the park. Whitwell Wood
Reputed to be the largest wood in Europe, Whitwell Wood is a broad-leaved woodland that covers 171 hectares. It has a very high nature conservation status and has a wide range of flora including over 20 species that are indicators of ancient woodland. There are also numerous features of archaeological interest.
